Product Spotlight: Shining a Light on LED Lamps

How and why LED lighting is leading the charge on portable, chargeable lighting solutions?

Whether you’re mad for mushroom’s or swinging into the 60’s with replica Verner Panton Flowerpot lamps in psychedelic shades, the recent slew of modern LED lamps in retro revival shapes are taking over.

From powder-coated pastels to sunny brights, matte to shiny chromes and metallics; lighting solutions add the perfect glow up (in form and function) to spaces. With their portability, transportability and lightweight profile, LED lamps are the perfect smart solution for renters to inject colour, function and personality into their home or spaces with little to nil access to power outlets. We’re shining a light (pun intended) on the LED light trend that’s leading the charge in small light solutions for home and office.

What does LED stand for?
The acronym LED stands for Light Emitting Diode. Known for being more energy efficient than incandescent or fluorescent lights, LED lamps function by converting electricity into light by way of a semi-conductor. What is a semi-conductor? In simple terms, a semi-conductor in regard to lighting is the term used for a device which emits light when an electrical current flows through it. Spruiking form and function, LED lamps are rapidly rising in popularity compared to older, more traditional lighting options, namely incandescent and fluorescent lighting.

The lowdown on LED versus Incandescent and Fluorescent Lighting:
Incandescent Lighting: An electric light which operates by warming up the filament in the globe which glows once heated. This extremely popular form of lighting is often found in domestic and commercial settings due to the versatility of bulb shapes, brightness and colour. Modern iterations have also begun to incorporate wireless technology which may allow the user to pair their lamp with smart devices such as Alexa or Siri to control lighting colour and on/off timings. Worth keeping in mind though are the notable shortcomings of incandescent lighting which includes poor efficiency and a short lifespan.

Fluorescent Lighting: Fluorescent lighting or fluorescent lamps produce light via a low-pressure mercury vapour gas discharge which produces an ultraviolet light. Sitting in between incandescent and LED lighting in terms of efficacy, fluorescent lighting generally bears a lower running cost than incandescent lighting however the initial cost of fixtures is higher. Other negatives may include an unappealing appearance and temperamental nature. As fluorescent lighting is run through tube-shaped fixtures, they are not the most aesthetically pleasing lighting solution. Similarly, they can be temperamental to temperature, operating best at room temperature. They are also prone to flickering which can be at best, distracting, and at work, highly problematic pending certain health conditions.
