How to Use Reflective Surfaces to Transform Your Space

Our designer tips and tricks to enhancing your space with Reflective Surfaces

When used creatively, reflective surfaces such as mirrors can enhance the aesthetics, scale, and ambiance of any room. Mirrors are often seen as purely functional items—tools for checking your appearance or reflecting light, but in the world of interior design, mirrors are so much more than just practical objects. Whether you're working with a small space or a sprawling house, mirrors can work wonders to make your space feel larger, brighter, and more stylish. Here’s a guide to incorporating mirrors into your home decor.

Create the Illusion of Space

One of the most powerful ways mirrors can work for you is by making a room feel bigger. When placed strategically, mirrors reflect light and the surrounding space, making even a small room seem larger and more airy. This is especially effective in small or narrow rooms, hallways, bathrooms, or studio apartments.

Full-Length Mirrors are perfect for creating depth, especially when leaned against a wall. Full-length mirrors can also help you maximise vertical space, drawing the eye upward to give the illusion of height - especially useful if you have low ceilings.

Add Light and Brightness

Mirrors are natural light enhancers. When placed opposite windows or light sources, mirrors bounce sunlight around the room, brightening dark corners and making the space feel more inviting. To optimise the flow of natural light, place mirrors opposite windows to reflect the light back into the room. In rooms without ample natural light an accent mirror can help create a warmer, more luminous environment by reflecting artificial light from lamps or overhead fixtures.

Serve as a Focal Point

A large, statement mirror can become a centrepiece in a room, adding a touch of drama or luxury. A beautiful, ornate mirror can serve as the focal point of a living room, entryway, or bedroom. The tradition of hanging a mirror above a fireplace continues to be popular because it creates a visually appealing symmetry and draws attention to the centre of the room. Choose mirrors with unique or intricate frames, this gives the mirror both a decorative function and a visual presence that elevates the overall design of the space. Look for mirrors with artistic or sculptural shapes—geometric designs, round mirrors with minimal frames, or vintage-inspired sunburst mirrors. These can turn a simple reflective surface into a bold artistic statement.

Use Mirrors to Highlight Architecture and Decor

Mirrors are also excellent tools for highlighting architectural features and existing decor elements. They can reflect the beauty of a room’s design or enhance the visual appeal of furniture and artwork. Place mirrors near or across from artwork to create a dynamic and layered design. The reflection of the art on the mirror can double the impact of the piece. If your space has interesting details like crown moulding, arches, or beams; mirrors can reflect and highlight those features, adding extra visual intrigue.

Create Visual Symmetry

Symmetry is a fundamental design principle that promotes balance and harmony in a room. Using mirrors can help reinforce this idea, whether through matching pairs of mirrors or through the reflective symmetry they introduce.

Place two identical mirrors on either side of a mantel, console table, or bed to create a balanced look.

Mirrors in Unexpected Places

While mirrors are often placed on walls, there are many creative and unexpected ways to incorporate them into your decor. Consider adding a mirrored coffee table, side table, or even a mirrored cabinet. These can bring an extra layer of luxury and glamour to your space. Small mirrored accessories like trays, picture frames, and lamp bases can subtly add reflective elements without overwhelming the room.

Mix and Match with Other Materials

While mirrors are often associated with sleek, reflective surfaces, they also work well in combination with other materials to create depth and texture in a room. Mixing mirrors with wood, metal, or fabric can introduce an exciting contrast to the smooth, shiny finish. Choose mirrors with a metallic frame - gold, silver, or bronze - if you want to add a touch of elegance and sophistication. Combining mirrors with industrial metal frames can also give a modern edge to a space.

Consider using a fabric framed mirror, such as in a velvet-lined frame or boucle to soften the sharp edges and introduce luxurious texture.

Consider Scale and Proportion

When using mirrors in decorating, scale and proportion are essential. A mirror should complement the size of the furniture and the dimensions of the room. In bigger rooms with expansive walls, choose large mirrors that fill the space and balance the other elements in the room. In smaller areas, smaller mirrors or a grouping of smaller mirrors can add visual interest without overpowering the space. Mirrors are more than just tools for checking your reflection—they are versatile design elements that can transform your home. Whether you're looking to brighten a room, create a sense of space, or add a touch of elegance, mirrors offer endless possibilities. From dramatic statement pieces to subtle accents, mirrors can elevate any room by enhancing light, scale, and style.
