From home to haute couture, we’re sailing the silver bullet train straight into a sparkling and everlasting Chromance.
We’re halfway through 2024 and one thing’s for sure, when it comes to metals and hardware this year, it’s out with the gold and in with the new; and by new we mean all things silver tinged. We’re deep in our Chromance era, melting head over heels for metallics that are intergalactic chromatic. Often flailing in second place to its somewhat superior golden counterpart, stainless steel, silver and chrome are shining bright as they lend a futuristic touch to interiors. Sparkling and scintillating, we’re bidding goodbye to gold in (not-so-second) place for silver!
What’s sparked this sparkling shift to silver?
From homewares to haute couture, silver hardware has been shining brighter than ever. This sparkling metallic is trending up a shiny storm as we’ve seen homewares, jewellery and fashion accessories lean into this cool-toned metallic after years of gold, bronze and copper accents taking the lead.
Prada’s iconic Cleo bag became a stalwart on fashion hit-lists and It Girl’s shoulder’s since it’s revival in 2022. Available in numerous colours, finishes and embellishments, the stand-out colourway was a high-shine silver metallic that kickstarted the campaign for silver’s pole position. Miuccia didn’t stop there, sprinkling silver fairy dust throughout Prada’s leather accessories including the cult kitten-heel slingbacks in patent silver leather which are as radiant as they are rare. Trickling down, more affordable yet equally coveted patent silver accessories ran rampant from Jacquesmus’ silver Le Ciuciu to By Far’s patent silver Billy Bag before infiltrating high-street retailers such as Zara.
How to chromify your interiors?
Silver, chrome and gunmetal accents offer a slightly more subdued take to metallics. While gold is often associated with glam, opulence and wealth, silver accents lean into a world of quiet luxury where ostentatious fixtures are out the door. Incorporating home décor accessories such as chrome hardware, handles, decorative trays, lamp bases and candle holders or stainless-steel cutlery, coffee cups (great for heat retention) and napkin rings are easy ways to add sparkle and dimension to your space.
Make metallics your own:
Whether you prefer subtle hints of sparkle or intense illumination, there’s a finish to suit all styles.
Polished: Mega-watt, high shine! Polished metallics will reflect shards of light, adding brightness and the appearance of a larger space due to the reflective quality. The downside, polished chrome is most partial to scratches and showing pesky fingerprints, so be prepared to polish regularly for maximum shine.
Matte: The most subdued of the finishes, a matte finish offers the least amount of sparkle but provides a smooth, tactile surface which is also less prone to scratches compared to its polished counterpart.
Brushed: A happy middle-ground between polished and matte metallics, brushed metal has a matte appearance but with a textural element. Crafted from what appears to be a finely and expertly scratched surface, this blemish-free option is perfect to add character while concealing wear and tear.
While this has been an ode to chrome, if you’ve still got mixed feelings over metals, there are no longer hard and fast rules against mixing metals to suit your tastes. Gold and silver can work tremendously well together, striking a harmonious metallic melody between cool-toned and warm shades, in turn adding flexibility when furnishing your space.
